Synopsis

Princes and Princesses

a film by Michel Ocelot

"A wonderfully imaginative collection of fairy tales." - Moira MacDonald, SEATTLE TIMES

From Michel Ocelot, the internationally acclaimed animator of Kirikou and the Wild Beast, comes Princes and Princesses, a sumptuous and elegant film of silhouette animation that is sure to delight audiences of all ages. In an old derelict theater, an art teacher and two students create six ravishing epic tales of love and adventure, each involving a prince or a princess. After coming up with an idea, they feed it to a special machine, and are hence magically transformed into the characters of the story they have devised. Created using a special style of cut-out animation, similar in spirit to Lotte Reiniger's mesmerizing The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926), Princes and Princesses uses black-silhouetted characters performing action against back-lit, enchantingly colored backdrops. Although the moving images may seem simple, the settings display extraordinary versatility, allowing Ocelot to model styles as diverse as ancient Egyptian landscapes to traditional Japanese art.
