CINEMA FROM THE WORLD
Princes and Princesses

Synopsis

By the world acclaimed animator of Kirikou and The Wild Beast comes this sumptuous and elegant film of silhouette animation that is sure to delight audiences of all ages.

In an old derelict theater, an art teacher and two of students create six ravishing epics of love and adventure, each involving a prince or a princess. All they have to do is come up with an idea, feed it to a special machine, and they are magically transformed into the characters of the created story.

Created using a special style of cutout animation, similar in spirit to Lotte Reiniger's mesmerizing The Adventures Of Prince Achmed [1926], all the tales use black silhouetted characters performing the action against back lit, enchantingly colored backdrops. Although the animation may seem simple, the characters and settings display extraordinary versatility, allowing Ocelot to model styles as diverse as Ancient Egyptian landscapes to traditional Japanese art.

Critical Acclaim

"I've said it before and I'll say it again: French animator Michel Ocelot deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as master animator Hayao Miyazaki. He really is that good."
